TV Show Analysis - Arrow

Arrow is a TV series that features Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy and Emily Bett-Rickards. It follows the life of a "superhero" that his decided to fight the injustice in his city and stop the corrupt rich folk that are causing the cities destruction.

The show uses action and violence to portray a dangerous city that is riddled with crime. The protagonist, Oliver Queen, has been on an island for 5 years away from society.

The TV program consists of Arrow, the protagonist, investigating crimes and solving them using vigilante justice which means that he can operate outside the law.

The lighting is relatively dark to show a unforgiving mood to the show. This is shown by the fact that they are not afraid to kill off characters and the themes of drugs and violence.

The episode usually includes a large amount of action scenes and in this has a wide variety of  stunts in the programme.

The show constantly uses flashbacks as a way to enrich the overall plot and explain some of the back story to the show. Stephen Amell(Arrow) uses monologue from time to time to give the audience a better idea of what is going through the characters head or it is used as a segway to a new scene.

Film Analysis - Taken

Taken is a film that is about a retired government agent who has to save his daughter from kidnappers in France. He does this by using his detective skills and mastery of combat to find his daughter and her captors. The shots used in the film are usually close-up shots to give a reaction of the characters, a large amount of establishing shots are also used to show off the location which it is set such as Chicago at the start and Paris later on in the film.

The film uses a dim lighting to portray a mood of depression and darkness which is why a the end the lighting is far brighter and much more happier mood.

Prototype Production Company Logo - CakeBox Productions

The logo that we used represented out company name which is CakeBox Productions. The cake is obviously in writing and we have a box surrounding this text to represent the box in the logo name. The colours we used is the same colours as a batten-burg cake which is a perfect design for our logo as it is a cake and it looks like a box.

Questionnaire Results - Media Studies

The majority of people prefer  the crime thriller genre as it is can contains intrigue and a bit of action. It is one of the most popular genres of TV and Film due to the fact that it has interesting character development.

The name cake box is inspired by a box that is used to store baking goods such as cakes. The general majority liked the company name but the others didn't like the fact that our film was a crime thriller and our name didn't exactly fit the film. We looked at other production company's and we came to the conclusion that paramount pictures don't make films about mountains so why does our film name have to relate to our company?

Do you prefer a solo cop, crime fighting partners or a whole team of cops?

Person 1: I like to see the dynamic of a team and see how they tackle a crime. However, the character development is usually lacking unless it is series based like CSI or Criminal Minds.

Person 2: I'm more into the partner in crime choice. I'm a huge fan of DC Comics & I love seeing the bond between characters like Batman & Robin, or Commissioner Gordon & Harvey Bullock.

Person 3: I prefer partners as usually a strong amount of trust is required to solve a case. I think it's interesting to see just how much they become reliant on one another & at what lengths they'll go to ensure both the safety of each other whilst solving the case.

What makes a good opening to a film of the crime genre?

Person 1: I like slow build ups. Then I like there to be a cliff hanger as it makes me want to watch more.

Person 2: I think that a good opening effectively establishes the main protagonist. I like it when there is clear elements of foreshadowing to showcase the villain like when bad things happen and the face is never revealed - only things like hands, feet, etc.

Person 3:  I like when the villain plays a large role with clear elements of screen time. I like having a visual insight as to what he/she is up to but still retaining the mystery aspect of it all.

Different Sounds In TV and Films

Different Sounds

Sound Bridges - When the sound from one scene continues into the next visual scene: aids smooth transition.

Parallel - Sounds which compliment the visual on screen.

Contrapuntuntal - Sounds which do not appear to suit the visual scene.

Film Idea Storyboard - First Draft

Here is a storyboard of my groups general first idea. It follows a theme of a crime/drama and is mainly a monologue with elements of 7even coming in when someone is cutting through the shots and making a bomb.

The general idea for the start is mainly shots to establish a location of the film which is a busy city such as London, New York or Chicago.
The music that has been used is not clear at this moment as it is most likely subject to change; However it is going to follow a crime/drama theme which is inspired by shows such as Luther or Silent Witness.
